Reading through Ludovic’s journals, as well as the ancient tomes already available at Stone Castle, gave Joanna many of the answers she sought. Still, many of the passages were vague at best and unintelligible at worst. Despite the wealth of knowledge the trio had gained on Alastor an Ulbrecht and the Vessel Stone, an important aspect remained unknown to Joanna: How to control the power of the stone.

Though she had tried to do it on her own, the effects she was capable of gaining from the amulet weren't always what she wanted. At first, she stuck to what she knew, relieving herself, Thomas, or Cromwell of their tiredness, but slowly she started experimenting with different forms of magic. At one time, she managed to strengthen her arms' muscles tremendously, which allowed her to easily hurl a large log over a distance of thirty feet, but since she didn't enhance her back nor legs, they ached terribly afterward. She cured the ache using the Vessel Stone but learned a valuable lesson in the process: She had to be mindful of consequences.
